Name that Movie!
June 28, 2009 at 8:49 am | In Uncategorized | 24 CommentsPicked up a rather awesome book the other day – The Art of the Modern Movie Poster. It features movie posters from around the world (but for well-known movies) and it’s fascinating to see how some of these films are ‘translated’ by artists from different countries. And as I was paging through the book I realized that I’d have a hard time even guessing what movie some were from. So, with that in mind, here’s a little quiz. Several posters from the book are shown below but with, in many cases, identifying information obscured. Name the movies that go with them. (Yeah, there are several unobscured/obvious ones too that I just added because I think they’re cool!)

UPDATE: Here’s all the same posters with the obfuscation removed:

I have a few movie poster books as well, not to mention numerous sheets in the closet waiting to get framed! I love the interpretive poster art and really wish US studios would return to this style. These excite and intrigue me about a movie, while the standard photoshop’d heads next to each other illicit no response whatsoever and look the exact same as the next poster. We need a return to art!

Oh and I’ll say 11: Apoc Now and 12: Carpenter’s The Thing. I know I’ve seen 6 before and love that poster, but I’m blanking on what it’s from. 10 is also a beautiful poster – History of Violence?

#10 is probably the most obscure out of these… mid-80s timeframe.

Ah, I remember 6 now: Its a interesting take on Star Wars. Those wacky Russians :)
I remember 5 as well, but I’m curious if anyone can guess that one as the imagery really has nothing to do with the movie, so I’ll remain quiet.
Going to have to google 10, that ones bugging me!

Hi, great site you have. I Certainly will look more at this site from now on. Also fun to see that people are still guessing although the right answers are provided already ;-) I must admit that I didn’t know most of the posters.
Perhaps I can invite your audience to have a look at the paintings of a spanish friend of mine, Jimi. He has a special style and I help him to promote him a little bit. As I have no clue about art it would be nice to hear someone elses opinion.
If you like to help out then please check http://forolibre.es and leave a comment if you like/dislike it.
Thanks,
René
